Moroccan Girls (our title)
About the Artist & Provenance: This painting is an absolute gem and was sold to us via an online auction in America. We were told this painting was originally purchased in Morocco in the late 1950's by an American art collector who felt it had a "Matisse" like feel to it. And we agree! Its a beauty and within quite an upmarket frame. We have done some research using the label and here is some info re: the The Foxhall Gallery in Washington. https://washingtoninst.org/the-foxhall-gallery-and-a-life-for-the-world/ Artist: UKNOWN Date produced: circa 1900s? Gentle Geraniums (our title)
About the Artist & Provenance: This painting intrigued us as it has such a confidence to the image, tender yet confident brush strokes - an almost 'Cezanne like' feel to the sturdy leaves and petals. But the back of the frame looks like at some point someone has reinforced the frame with some newer strips of wood. Maybe the painting was put into an older frame. This does happen sometimes - people want to make a painting look older. So we aren't entirely sure. However, the style of painting - mark making and colouring looks to be late 1890s. And the painting looks perfect in this frame so in a sense it doesn't matter. If you love it as much as us, then you'll just fall in love with it - like we did! Harbour with blue sky
About the Artist & Provenance: This painting is a beautifully vibrant Folk or Primitive style painting - which is very much in the vein of Cornish Primitive painter Alfred Wallis. I can't seem to find anything on this painter but the quality of the frame (originally - now it has some water damage bottom right as in the pictures) makes me think that someone who valued it highly bothered to get it a decent, professional frame. So it may have been exhibited. We are going to find it hard to part with this one! Artist: UKNOWN Date produced: circa 1950's?
